Facts about Meenakshi Temple:

The City of Madurai had been the capital of the south indian Pandya Empire since the 2nd century BC.  The more ancient roots of the temple remain unknown. The temple has been mentioned in tamil literature at least since the 7th century.  Today`s Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu South India  was built between 1623 and 1655 CE, while some of its oldest parts date back to the 13th century. It`s main deity is the goddess Parvati in the form of Meenakshi worshipped here with her consort Shiva in the form of Sundareswarar (the beautiful). The temple forms the heart of the 2,500-year-old city of Madurai. It has the rank of an important symbol for the Tamil people. Meenakshi Temple houses 14 so called gopurams (gateway towers), ranging from 45–50 m in height and two golden sculptured vimanas, the shrines over the sanctums sanctorum (garbhagrihas) of the main deities. The temple attracts 15,000 visitors a day, around 25,000 on Fridays. Meenakshi  is regarded as an avatar of the goddess Parvati – one of the few Hindu female deities to have a major temple devoted to her. The name “Meenachchi” means fish-eyed and is derived from the words “meena” meaning fish and “akṣi” meaning eyes. Goddess Meenakshi is the principal deity of the temple, not Sundareswarar (Shiva), unlike most Shiva temples in South India where the male form of Shiva is the principal deity.
